Les pénitents noirs de Billom / The Black Penitents of Billom.

This is a painting by Nicholas Berthon showing a procession along the Stations of the Cross. In the Catholic faith, the "Stations of the Cross" is a ceremony which commemorates Christ's Passion by evoking 14 particular moments of the Passion.

The colours of this painting are dark. I think this is because the subject is tragic. The procession of the Black Penitents in Billom happens once a year. They are generally people who have done something bad and want God to forgive them.

The man leading the procession is also dressed in black. He is holding a staff on top of which is a cup of the "Blood of Christ". This "Blood of Christ" was generally brought back from the Holy Land because pilgrims brought things back from there which they claimed was holy.

The man in red carrying the cross personifies Christ.

Behind the procession, there are villagers some of which are at their balconies in order to see better what is going on.

I have chosen this painting because everything to do with God I find interesting. I have been a Believer since I was very young. I always go to church, be it in France or in Poland (my family is from Poland). When I see this painting, it makes me think of all the pilgrimages I have been on, like Lourdes which I have been to several times. In my opinion, all the Faithful should take part in processions and pilgrimages, etc., because they are a definite plus in the life of Christians.
